The City of Spokane City Council has passed a new ordinance that prohibits private sector employers from requesting and considering criminal history until after an interview. The ordinance covers all types of work and applies to all private employers with limited exceptions. In addition, employers cannot advertise openings in a way that excludes people with arrest or conviction records (e.g. “no criminal background”).
The ordinance goes into effect in June.
